LCI Annual Meeting 2025
We are pleased to announce that Early-Bird registration is now open for LCI 2025, this year’s annual meeting, hosted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine! Early-Bird registration ends at 11:59pm CT on Monday, September 8.
This year’s meeting will run all day Friday, October 10-Saturday, October 11. (The plan is to begin around 8:00am CT Friday and conclude around 5:00pm CT Saturday.

LCI 2025 Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Angela Scott
Angela Scott M.D, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the UAMS Department of Pediatrics with a joint appointment in the Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, her medical degree and her doctorate in the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston prior to residency training in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After practicing general pediatrics for several years, she came to UAMS for fellowship training in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and joined the faculty in 2016.
In addition to her clinical work, which focuses mainly on autism spectrum disorders, she is heavily involved in undergraduate medical education as director of the Practice of Medicine I course. She also teaches several senior electives, including Literature & Medicine and Art & Medicine, as well as the Humanities Honors Track. Dr Scott is a 2022 Fellow of the Art Museum-Based Health Professions program through the Harvard Macy Institute, and since participating in that program has designed & implemented several additional humanities and museum-based activities for a wide array of trainees, including pediatric residents and students across colleges through the UAMS Office of Interprofessional Education.
Shultz Travel Award Application
Professional staff funding is available through the Shultz Travel Award for Professional Staff. We know that it can be difficult for staff to fund professional development for a national conference. The award will provide up to $500 reimbursement for travel/hotel costs to attend the annual meeting for up to two staff attendees. Specifically, the award will be given as a reimbursement for individual out of pocket expenses and more details will be provided to the awardees.
Award details:
The LCI Administrative and Professional Staff committee will select up to two professional staff each year to receive the award.
Priority will be given to staff participating as workshop, poster, or research presenters; and staff who have financial support from their institution.
Recipients from LCI member institutions preferred.
Award funds may be used toward any travel expenses, as deemed necessary by the recipient.
The application is available here and due no later than Friday, August 15, 2025 at 5pm (PST). Award decisions will be announced the last week of August.

Student Travel Scholarships
The LCI is pleased to announce we have funds to offer two student travel scholarships, to help offset expenses associated with attending this year’s annual meeting.
Any student may apply for the scholarship, to assist with their travel expenses related to attending the annual meeting.
Priority will be given to those students who have accepted abstracts for LCI 2025.
Funds will be paid after the meeting.

LCI Awards
A summary of each award, and nomination instructions are below.
The Ron Arky Award: Given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of learning communities in medical education. The Award is given annually for a deserving individual, faculty, staff or trainee who best exemplifies the spirit of the award.
Nomination process: The nominator must submit a letter of nomination to the awards committee and ask another person to submit a letter in support of the nomination to the selection committee. Letters can be emailed to Sara Tariq (stariq71@gmail.com) with a cc to Jamie Karl (jkarl4@jhu.edu). Both letters must be received by September 26. The Susan Shultz Award: Recognizes professional staff, at the various LCI institutions, who make a significant contribution of the development of learning communities on their local campuses, in the LCI, and the broader medical education community.
Nomination process: The nominator must submit a letter of nomination to the awards committee and ask another person to submit a letter in support of the nomination to the selection committee. Letters can be emailed to Sara Tariq (stariq71@gmail.com) with a cc to Jamie Karl (jkarl4@jhu.edu). Both letters must be received by September 26. LCI Program Innovation Award: recognize institutions and their programs that are leading the way in learning communities movement in medical education. The award seeks to recognize programs that: find new and innovative ways to utilize the learning communities framework; contribute to the research or literature surrounding learning communities in medical education; and serve as a model for other institutions in the areas of curriculum, mentoring, career advising, wellness programming, or other support of student professional identity formation
Nomination process: Any LCI member may nominate a program or initiative at their own school or another LCI member school. Nominations should be submitted, using (this form), and must be received by September 26. More information about the Program Innovation Award can be found here.
